Ivanhoe is approximately 12 km to the north east of Melbourne. The Boulevard, a street in Ivanhoe, is renowned for its annual Christmas light display. The site is within walking distance of several parks, a public golf course and the Yarra River. The topography of the site falls moderately to steeply in the direction of the Yarra River and Melbourne city. The views of the Melbourne skyline, which are as a result of this fall, have been framed through the double storey window in the cantilevered section of the house.
The systems used in the house integrate ESD elements with technology. The security, lighting, shading and heating and cooling systems are controlled by a CPU which acts as a Building Management System. The zoned heating and cooling systems reduce energy wasted through the controlled and isolated heating and cooling of the different areas of the house. The CPU is automated and can be remotely controlled creating more flexibility in the use and control of the systems. In addition to the active elements noted above passive ESD elements such as double glazing and insulation have been used in the design.
